OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — Offshore wind power company Orsted is trying to get out of a $300 million guarantee it agreed to pay New Jersey in the event it failed to build its first wind farm off the state's coast. Last Tuesday, the Danish firm scrapped its Ocean Wind I and II projects in southern New Jersey, saying the projects were no longer financially feasible. It also was obligated to pay an additional $200 million toward the development of the offshore wind industry in New Jersey. Orsted wrote off $4 billion last week, due largely to costs associated with the cancellation of its two New Jersey projects. New Jersey still has several other offshore wind projects in various stages of development, with four new proposals submitted in August alone.

Ron Nyswaner, the Oscar- and Emmy-nominated screenwriter, can still recall a chance meeting on a beach more than 50 years ago. Then a teenager and a self-described “Jesus freak,” he’d come to Ocean City, N.J., to attend a Youth for Christ conference. That young man asked him to speak in tongues — it was an invitation to religious ecstasy and nothing more. Moving back and forth from the early 1950s to the late ’80s, “Fellow Travelers,” based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon, is a précis of 20th-century queer history viewed through a turbulent relationship between two men. Jonathan Bailey (“Bridgerton”) plays Tim Laughlin, a milk-drinking, God-loving naïf who dreams of working for Senator Joseph McCarthy.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — The Danish wind energy company Orsted has put up a $100 million guarantee that it will build New Jersey's first offshore wind farm. But it would forfeit the guarantee money if the project is not operational by December 2025. As an example, on Thursday, New York regulators rejected a request from companies for larger subsidies to complete large-scale wind, solar and offshore wind projects, saying the expected the companies to abide by the terms of their deals with the state. “I can affirm that Ocean Wind I shall complete and operate the Ocean Wind I approximate 1,100-megawatt qualified offshore wind project,” he wrote. Orsted has federal approval for the Ocean Wind I project, and has state approval for a second New Jersey project, Ocean Wind II.

Photographer: Al Drago/Bloomberg via Getty Images Al Drago | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesInflation is "always going to be a risk" in the U.S. due to structural changes in the labor market, according to Nela Richardson, chief economist at payroll processing firm ADP. Prior to that, interest rates had remained low for a decade as central banks around the world looked to stimulate their respective economies in the wake of the global financial crisis. "This was an economy built on very close to zero interest rates for 10 years of economic expansion, and that was OK because inflation was super low," she said. watch now"But now inflation has awakened, and if you look at demographic trends, labor shortages are not going away.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) — A proposed wind energy project off New Jersey would be among the farthest from land on the East Coast, the New York-based development company said Monday. Wind power developers have struggled to make progress, however, due to supply chain issues, higher interest rates, and a failure so far to garner enough tax credits from the federal government. Orsted, the Danish wind energy company, would build its first project about 13 to 15 miles off the coast of Atlantic City and Ocean City. “Offshore wind development makes no sense from either an environmental or economic standpoint,” he said. It is pursuing another offshore wind project in New York about 50 miles south of Jones Beach.

They come as New Jersey continues to grow as a hub of opposition to offshore wind projects from residents' groups and their political allies, mostly Republicans. The state's Democratic governor and Democratic-controlled Legislature want to make the state the East Coast leader in offshore wind energy. “Our goal is to bring offshore wind energy monitoring activities into this partnership. Opponents of offshore wind blame the deaths of 70 whales along the East Coast since December on offshore wind site preparation work. Earlier this week, Republicans in the state Senate called for a moratorium on all offshore wind projects.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) — As the U.S. races to build offshore wind power projects, transforming coastlines from Maine to South Carolina, much remains unknown about how the facilities could affect the environment. So far, four offshore wind projects have been approved by the federal government for the U.S. East Coast, according to the American Clean Power Association. The company is a Danish wind power business that will build two of the three offshore projects approved for New Jersey. Numerous others have been proposed, and the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management plans to review at least 16 offshore wind projects by 2025. The federal government has endorsed — but not required — compensation to the fishing industry for negative effects from offshore wind.

A news segment demonstrating the procedures in place to protect U.S. presidential air space is circulating with the false claim that it shows military protection against those who try to fly over Antarctica. On social media, conspiracy theories that the U.S. or other governments are hiding secrets in Antarctica have persisted. Reuters traced the video to an NBC News Today Show segment uploaded to YouTube in July 2017 on how the Air National Guard protects presidential airspace (bit.ly/3DCBTRr). The report demonstrated the procedures in place for when an unidentified aircraft enters temporarily restricted airspace during a presidential event or visit. The video shows a segment aired by NBC’s Today Show in 2017 and was filmed in New Jersey, not Antarctica.

The company sells its chairs for around $12,000 — a particularly hefty sum considering that beach wheelchairs aren’t covered by Medicaid or Medicare. There also is at least one manual model that can be propelled by the user: the Hippocampe All-Terrain Beach Wheelchair, which retails for around $4,000 and is manufactured by Vipamat, based in France. Among the more economical options, Wheeleez offers kits to convert a street wheelchair into a beach wheelchair.
